Participating in Research Projects.

  1. February – October 1988: Immunology Dept., Kimron Veterinary Investigation Center. Vaccination against Staphylococcus aureus mastitis in cows. Under Prof. Ze'ev Trainin. This project has since ended in the successful development of a now available commercial vaccine.

  1. January 1990: Refael Industries Israel: The development of a new type of a cardio-vascular pump for ex-vivo circulation during open heart surgery. I was a member of a surgical team headed by Dr. Bruce Christie, working on calves in the experimental stage. The pump was completed and accepted by the FDA.

  1. Sept. 1992: Dr. Norman Godin, Biomedix, Switzerland: "Contact Sensitivity of the Gastric Mucosa to Anti Reflux Valve Material in Pigs". In order to test the biocompatibility of elastomer material in the stomach of adult sows, as an effort to develop a valve versus the reflux of gastric mucosa in people suffering, e.g., from hiatus hernia. I was the chief (and only) surgeon in the project. Three months post implantation, no local reaction to the gastric mucosa, or systemic effects (biochemical, hematological or other pathological effects), were seen in the experimental animals.

  1. September 1993, for a few months: "Enhancement of Bone Growth into Pre Heated Orthopedic Implants" with Prof. Uri Oron from Zoology Dept. Tel Aviv University. We have designed an experimental model to test the growth of new bone into implants, (s.s. orthopedic screws), which were treated with special heat conditions (and then cooled), prior to insertion. Positive results, were published in the J. of Orthop. Trauma, 1998. (I was the first author).

  1. September 1993, for a few months. "Treatment of Open Fractures in New Born Calves". In cows experiencing dystocia, there is a high percentage of their calves suffering from iatrogenic fractures caused by an over zealous assistance in the process of calving. Open fractures developed in most of these calves, which were usually treated by applying a plaster cast. In Israel, this amounts to about 2000 calves per year (an estimate from Dr. N. Schpiegel). We have devised an External Fixator System (ESF) which allowed the concurrent fixation and continued treatment (lavaging open fractures) of these calves. This was easy to apply, and could be used by practitioners in the field, using minimum of specialized equipment.

Extra Mural (Self) Education:

  1. Since 1998, in Hadassah Hospital, Mt. Scopus. With Dr. Y. Matan (Head of Joint Replacement Units): Observing (on a regular basis) new techniques in operative surgery in fractures and joints replacement in humans.

  2. 1999: Kaplan Hospital, Rehovot: Observation of Total Hip and Total Knee replacements, with several of the department's surgeons.

  3. Since 2004, Hadassah Hospital, Ein Kerem: Neuro Surgical Procedures, with Professor Felix Umanski, Head of Neuro surgery department.
